The head coach of Blues, Hannu Virta, promises that his team plays hard physical game tomorrow for their fans, in order to honour the 20th anniversary of the Blues Hockey Club.
"The results from the previous Kärpät-game were good, and we will continue with the same style as we did in Kempele on Thursday. We did have many penalties, but that doens't bother us at the moment, since we are trying as we are "driving" our team into this new strategy". Virta says that he is pleased with the attitude of his team.
The coaching team of Blues wishes to see the same fighting attitude as they saw last year at the end of the regular season, and in the play-offs.
Therefore we can expect that the boards around the rink will have a hard night as the players from Espoo return to their roots, headed by the colossal defenceman Kari Haakana. The rink of the old arena is very narrow, and the Blues-players are really looking forward to testing it again.
"In the narrow rink of Matinkylä the physical aspects of the game will be more visible than normally. Rapperswil is a good opponent and they have quality foreigners, out of which Mikko Eloranta, Marko Tuulola and Dale McTavish, who also used to play in Espoo, are best known to the Finnish audience", said Hannu Virta.
Rapperswil has played already against HPK, Pelicans and today against Ilves in Tampere on their Finnish tour. The team's head coach is also known to Finns, Kari "Piri" Eloranta.
Blues will play mostly with the same lineups as against Kärpät. In the goal naturally Mika Oksa (btw, this guy has just recovered from cancer), and also Rami Alanko who was missing from Kärpät-game is now in roster.

Ensimmäinen erä:
Alku on täysin Rappin hallinnassa - Ilves täysin unessa. Molemmat maalit tulivat kahdella yhtä vastaan tilanteista. Sen jälkeen peli tasaantui ja Ilves pääsi peliin mukaan.
Toinen erä:
Alussa tuli 0-3 tuli Ilveksen virheestä omassa päädyssä - huono purku. Taas erän alku vaikea Ilvekselle...
Kolmas erä:
Tasainen erä. Lopussa Jäminki 2+10 päähän kohdistunut taklaus.

Rapperswil dominated the game completely - Ilves was fully asleep. Both goals were scored from a 2-1 attack. After that the game got more even, and also Ilves was able to "participate" in the game.
Second period:
0-3 was scored from an error at the defensive area - poor attempt to shoot the puck away. Another difficult beginning for Ilves.
Third period:
A close period, evenly played. In the end Jäminki got 2+10min for checking an opponents head.

Rapperswil terävänä ottelun alussa
(13.8.2004) Ilveksen kauden toinenkin harjoituspeli sujui tappiollisissa merkeissä. Sveitsiläinen SC Rapperswil teki heti ottelun alussa kaksi nopeaa maalia eivätkä tupsukorvat onnistuneet missään vaiheessa ottelua kuittaamaan näitä takaiskuja. Rapperswil voitti ottelun lopulta maalein 4-1. Ilveksen ainoasta osumasta vastasi Cory Murphy.
Rapperswil iski jo voittoon asti lopulta riittäneet kaksi osumaa ottelun alussa 33 sekunnin sisään. Ensin vierailijat onnistuivat ylivoiman viimeisillä sekunneilla. Fabian Stephanin pystysyöttö avasi sveitsiläisille 2-1 -ylivoimahyökkäyksen, jonka päätteeksi Stefan Hurlimann napautti Mikko Elorannan syötöstä hieman epäonnistuneellakin laukauksella kiekon tänään Ilveksen maalia vartioineen Krister Antilan selän taakse.
Heti seuraavassa vaihdossa Antila joutui antautumaan toistamiseen, kun Tapparan paidastakin tutun Niki Sirenin rannelaukaus upposi oikeaan ylänurkkaan.
Muita osumia ei avauserässä enää nähtykään. Ilvesläisittäin erän näyttävin tilanne syntyi, kun Jesse Niinimäki meni komeasti vartaloharhautuksella pakin ohi ja pääsi nokikkain sveitsiläisten maalivahdin Marco Streitin kanssa. Viimeistely ei petolauman nuorelta taiturilta kuitenkaan onnistunut.
Toisen erän alussa Rapperswil lisäsi johtonsa jo 3-0:aan. Komean osuman viimeisteli Cyrill Geyer, joka tykitti suoraan NHL-kaukaloissakin esiintyneen Stacy Roestin lätystä kiekon lämärillä verkon perukoille. Krister Antila ei tälle maalille mahtanut yhtään mitään.
Ilveksen tämän kauden maalitili aukesi vihdoin ajassa 28.15. Simo Vidgren antoi hienon poikittaissyötön maalin editse ja viime kauden tehopakki Cory Murphy jatkoi yhdellä kosketuksella kiekon verkkoon. Tupsukorvat hallitsivat toisen erän pelitapahtumia selvästi kavennusmaalinsa jälkeen, mutta pääosin hallinta oli vain pikkunäppärää kikkailua eikä kunnon tekopaikkoja juurikaan nähty.
Päätöserässä molemmilla joukkueilla oli omat maalipaikkansa, mutta molemmat maalivahdit olivat löytäneet hyvän torjuntavireen. Marko Luomalalla oli 52. peliminuutin kohdalla erinomainen tilaisuus laittaa ottelun loppu jännäksi. Luti sai yrittää pariinkin otteeseen maalintekoa aivan Marco Streitin nokan alta, mutta sveitsiläisvahti venytti molemmilla kerroilla polkkeensa kiekon tielle.

Auch im 3. Vorbereitungsspiel in Finnland siegte der SCRJ, diesmal gegen Ilves in Tampere mit 1:4 (0:2, 1:1, 0:1). Obwohl in diesem Spiel Capaul, Weber, McTavish und Baumann pausierten, zeigte der SCRJ speziell kämperisch und einsatzstark eine tadellose Leistung und setzte sich klar durch. Im Tor stand diesmal wieder Streit.

Rapperswil sharp in the beginning
(13.8.2004) Also the seasons second practise game for Ilves ended up in a loss. SC Rapperswil from Switzerland scored 2 quick goals in the beginning of the game, and there was no way they could come back to the game afterwards. Rapperswil won the game finally by 1-4, the only goal for Ilves was scored by Cory Murphy.
Rapperswil scored the 2 goals required for the victory in the beginning within 33 seconds. First the visitors were successful during the last few seconds of the powerplay. A long pass by Fabian Stephan released the Swiss to a 2-1 attack, at the end of which Stefan Hürlimann scored even with a slightly unsuccessful the puck behind the goalie Kristian Antila, from a pass of Mikko Eloranta.
Immediately after that Antila had to give up again, when the wrist shot of a man known also from Tappara, Niki Siren, flew into the upper right corner of the net. No more goals were seen in the first period, but Ilves had a good chance, when Jesse Niinimäki passed the Swiss defense with a deke, and had a breakaway against the goalie. The young talent didn’t anyway manage to beat Marco Streit.
At the beginning of the second period Rapperswil added their lead already to 3-0. A beautiful goal was finalised by Cyrill Gever, who blasted the puck into the net from the assist of Stacy Roest, who we also know from the NHL. Kristian Antila had absolutely no chance to save this shot.

Simo Vidgren gave a good cross-pass in front of the goal, where last season’s scorer-defenseman Cory Murphy directed the puck into the net. After this Ilves controlled the game seemingly, but didn’t create any major scoring chances.
In the final period both teams had their chances, but both goalies played very well. Marko Luomala had his chance to make the game interesting after 52 minutes. He had a chance to try to score over and over again right under the nose of Marco Streit, but the Swiss goalie was unbeatable.
The chances for Ilves were finally totally trashed one minute before the end. Cory Murphy lost the puck in his defense-area, and Stefan Hürlimann got a breakaway. As the goal of Ilves was empty, Hürlimann had an easy task to finalise his second goal of the evening.
In the battle that ended in a 1-4 loss for Ilves, no individuals rose above others. Marko Anttila from 4th line deserves credit for his efforts. Timo Peltomaa showed some of his famous skills in protecting the puck, and created a few dangerous situations by doing so. From the defense the game of Ville Koistinen seemed to be the best of the team. In total the play of Ilves was very confusing, which is still understandable at this time of the season. Especially passing and sensible patterns were missing.
Ilves will continue their practise games next week at Tampere-Cup.

Rapperswil beats Ilves
Ilves played for the first time this season on the ice of Hakametsä (their home arena) and left a positive image of themselves, even though the Swiss won the game by 1-4.
Rapperswil got a dream-start for their game, as they took the lead after a few minutes of playing. When Antti-Jussi Miettinen was sitting in the penalty box, Mikko Eloranta who moved to Rapperswil and Stefan Hürlimann skated away for a 2-1 attack. Eloranta passed, and Hürlimann thanked by scoring a goal. The goalie of Ilves, Kristian Antila can take a part of the “credit”.
And it didn’t last long when the same happened again. This time the assist was given by another Finn Niki Siren, and the goal was scored by the young defenseman Sando Gmür. The time advanced only 33 seconds from the previous goal.
The home audience had the chance to admire some Ilves-skills before the mid of the period, when the young center who was injured the entire last season deked his way past Gmür and had his chance against Marco Streit. Jesse deked, but Streit made the save.
After the shock of the beginning, Ilves got better into the game, and was able to create some scoring opportunities. E.g. Tommi Jäminki had a good chance, but didn’t’ manage to score.

Rapperswil extended their lead already to 3 goals in the beginning of the second period. The Canadian center Stacy Roest passed from the side, and Cyrill Geyer really blasted the puck with a hard slapshot under the crossbar of Ilves-net.

Still before the end of the period, the NHL-drafted Marko Anttila had his place, when this big player passed the defenseman of Rapperswil quite easily and shot a good shot. Streit was better.
Getting better, getting better...
The longer the game went, the better Ilves played and the control moved more to them. They were able to control the puck, and even passing game was surprisingly good compared to the time of the year. Powerplay was horrible, but that is also natural as they haven’t had many chances to practise it. The best line of Ilves was the first line led by Jesse Niinimäki, where Tommi Turunen and Timo Peltomaa where wingers. But even they were not able to score any more goals. Closest to another goal came Marko Luomala, who had multiple chances of sticking the puck in the net, but Streit was always better.
After Ilves pulled their goalie and took a timeout, they tried to score one more goal, but that plan was ruined by Stefan Hürlimann who scored the empty-netter. The Swiss team who played with only 17 players slowed down after starting really well, they didn’t control the game anymore, but scored their goals from counter-attacks. Mikko Eloranta who moved from TPS to Rapperswil was his own normal self, by trying to irritate the players of Ilves. The other new Finnish reinforcement Marko Tuulola didn’t do much on the ice. Other players worth mentioning from Ilves were Ismo Kuoppala, Joonas Rönnberg and Marko Anttila. The try-out players Lasse Korhonen and Ossi-Petteri Grönholm were difficult to judge.

Rapperswil sharp in the beginning
(13.8.2004) Also the seasons second practise game for Ilves ended up in a loss. SC Rapperswil from Switzerland scored 2 quick goals in the beginning of the game, and there was no way they could come back to the game afterwards. Rapperswil won the game finally by 1-4, the only goal for Ilves was scored by Cory Murphy.
Rapperswil scored the 2 goals required for the victory in the beginning within 33 seconds. First the visitors were successful during the last few seconds of the powerplay. A long pass by Fabian Stephan released the Swiss to a 2-1 attack, at the end of which Stefan Hürlimann scored even with a slightly unsuccessful the puck behind the goalie Kristian Antila, from a pass of Mikko Eloranta.
Immediately after that Antila had to give up again, when the wrist shot of a man known also from Tappara, Niki Siren, flew into the upper right corner of the net. No more goals were seen in the first period, but Ilves had a good chance, when Jesse Niinimäki passed the Swiss defense with a deke, and had a breakaway against the goalie. The young talent didn’t anyway manage to beat Marco Streit.
