Beitrag von Zürcher »

VANCOUVER (CP) - Goalie Reto Berra stopped 24 shots to lead Switzerland to a 2-0 win over Norway on Tuesday night at the world junior hockey championship.

Mathias Joggi scored the only goal Switzerland (1-0) would need on the power play in the second period. Dario Burgler added a second goal with the man advantage in the third. Norway (0-2) lost its opening game 11-2 to the United States on Monday. There are 10 teams in the tournament, with the top three in each pool advancing to the playoff round, The other two fall to the relegation round.

Norwegian goalie Ruben Smith stopped 43 shots against Switzerland after giving up six goals on 32 shots he faced in a period and a half against the Americans.

Joggi opened the scoring at 13:52. Matthias Bieber took the initial shot, which Smith stopped before Joggi picked up the rebound and scored on a high shot over the fallen Norwegian netminder.

Norway's Mathis Olimb had a great chance to tie the game early in the third when he found himself alone in the slot with the puck. Olimb fired a low shot to the far corner, but Berra kicked out his left leg to make a pad save.

Later in the period, the Norwegians had another great chance to tie the game when they had a two-man advantage for 1:08. Olimb had the best opportunity, but Berra stopped his wrist shot.

Burgler converted on Switzerland's ninth power-play chance of the game, taking a nice cross-ice pass from Juraj Simak and firing a shot past Smith at 14:04.

Norway went 0-for-6 with the man advantage.

Switzerland faces Canada on Wednesday. Norway has a day off before tackling the Canadians on Thursday.
